The renowned Dafford Muralists capture Paducah's rich history in paintings on this UNESCO Creative City's floodwall overlooking the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. This visionary project began in the spring of 1996. The first twenty-panel timeline was completed in 2001 and the last ten rail history panels in the three block section were unveiled in 2022.
As Paducah's most popular 24/7 art history attraction, the floodwall murals intrigues thousands of visitors and locals alike to view and read all about this river city's rich and colorful history anytime ~ day or night. The one-liner, "Bright Star on the River" certainly describes these images, especially when showcased after the sun sets as they glow like a shiny border, framing the images along Paducah's riverfront.
Paducah Wall to Wall, portraits of our past, commenced in the spring of 1996 and has been researched, designed and painted by the extraordinary team of Dafford muralists. Painted sepia-toned images of historical scenes provide the backdrop for the title. The mural depicts flora and fauna that are indigenous to Kentucky as well as the silhouette of a cardinal, the state bird. The names of Robert Dafford’s team of talented artists who have worked diligently on the project are listed beneath his name. The Dafford Mural team, based in Lafayette, LA, spends a couple of months each year in Paducah, painting and maintaining the project. They and the Floodwall Mural Advisory Board were dedicated to authenticity of each creation. Three blocks on the city side of the floodwall were completed in 2007.
Sponsored by the combined efforts of the Floodwall Mural Advisory Board and individual mural sponsors.
The centerpiece of this mural is the February 1948 cover of the Enthusiast magazine featuring officers David Drew and Jullian Pryor Slaughter on their Harleys flanking the statue of Chief Paduke. Also shown are: Paducah motorcycle racer “Tennessee Slim” Mayo; former Hank Brothers True Value Hardware owner Gus Ed Hank, Jr., who was a dispatch rider aboard a Harley in World War II; and members of Kentucky’s five Harley Owners Group chapters on their bikes.
